Italy's radio landscape combines a strong public broadcasting tradition with an exceptionally fragmented private sector. RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana) operates three national radio networks: RAI Radio 1 (the most listened-to, mixing news, entertainment, and sport), RAI Radio 2 (music and entertainment), and RAI Radio 3 (culture, classical music, and arts). Italy's constitutional framework allows enormous numbers of private radio stations — Italy is estimated to have over 1,000 local commercial radio stations, one of the densest radio markets in Europe. Italian radio carries the country's rich musical heritage: opera (Italy is its homeland), cantautori singer-songwriter tradition, contemporary Italian pop, and a strong club/electronic scene. Vatican Radio, one of the world's oldest international broadcasters, also broadcasts from Rome.
