Indonesia's radio landscape serves the world's fourth most-populous nation across an archipelago of 17,000 islands. Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), the public broadcaster, maintains a network covering every province including remote Papua and the outermost islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Private radio exploded after the 1998 Reformasi era ended Suharto's broadcast controls, and today Jakarta alone has dozens of commercial FM stations. Indonesian radio carries the country's diverse music: dangdut (the immensely popular genre blending Indian, Malay, and Arabic rhythms) reaches its largest audiences through radio; pop Indonesia and pop Barat (Western pop) dominate city FM stations; and regional music from Java, Bali, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan serves local audiences that national stations can't reach.
